Watchmen's Alex Tse Wrote Script for Live-Action Ninja Scroll

Also wrote animated Tales of the Black Freighter based on Moore, Gibbons' comic

The Hollywood Reporter newspaper notes in a Monday article that Alex Tse, a co-writer of the live-action Watchmen film, wrote a film script for Warner Brothers' proposed live-action adaptation of the Ninja Scroll anime. Yoshiaki Kawajiri wrote and directed the original 1993 anime film about a wandering ninja fighting a conspiracy of demons. Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company acquired the live-action adaptation rights to the anime for Warner Brothers in 2008.

Tse and David Hayter (X-Men, The Scorpion King) co-wrote the live-action film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen graphic novel. Tse and Watchmen director Zack Snyder also co-wrote the Tales of the Black Freighter animated video based on Watchmen's "comic-within-a-comic" story. Tse has since written a script for Warner Brothers' planned new film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man classic short story anthology. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tse is scripting a proposed film version of John Twelve Hawks' Fourth Realm trilogy of science-fiction novels.

In Japan, Tatsuo Sato directed a Ninja Scroll television anime sequel for the MADHOUSE anime studio in 2003. MADHOUSE co-founder Masao Maruyama is still working on plans for a second Ninja Scroll anime film. However, as of 2008, project still needs a script that is acceptable to Maruyama himself and Kawajiri.

Seattle's Sakura-Con Hosts Trigun Film Premiere, Staff

Director Nishimura, designer Yoshimatsu, One Piece's Luffy actress Tanaka

Sakura-Con has announced that it will hold the world premiere of the Trigun: Badlands Rumble film during the April 2-4 convention in Seattle, Washington. The convention is three weeks before the April 24 opening of the film in Japan.

Like the television anime series that came before it, the anime studio MADHOUSE is basing the film on Yasuhiro Nightow's popular Trigun manga. Director Satoshi Nishimura, character designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu, mechanical designer Noriyuki Jinguji, and musical composer Tsuneo Imahori are returning to the franchise after having worked on the television series . Nightow and Nishimura conceived of the story concepts which Yasuko Kobayashi (Claymore, Shakugan no Shana, Witchblade anime) turned into a shooting script. Masaya Onosaka, Sho Hayami, Hiromi Tsuru, and Satsuki Yukino are reprising their roles of Vash the Stampede, Nicolas D. Wolfwood, Meryl Stryfe, and Milly Thompson, respectively.

Nishimura and Yoshimatsu are appearing as guests of this year's Sakura-Con. In addition to Trigun, Nishimura directed Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit) and Shin Cho Bakumatsu Shonen Seiki Takamaru, and he storyboarded episodes of Black Lagoon, Card Captor Sakura, Monster, Paradise Kiss, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. Yoshimatsu designed the characters in several Slayers and Future GPX Cyber Formula projects, Basquash!, Kiba, Desert Punk, and the two Jubei-chan - Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch television series.

Adult Swim to Begin at 9:00 p.m. Starting in 2011

Starting in January 2011, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block will start at 9:00 p.m. instead of 10:00 p.m in the United States. In January 2009, the adult-animation segment had changed its start date from 11:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Stu Snyder, COO of Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media, said the move will be a chance for the brand to further develop. "Let's be clear," Snyder said, "the choice to go to 9 p.m. is 100 percent a reflection on the success of Adult Swim as a brand."

According to Nielsen data, last year Cartoon Network's viewer average between 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. increased 9 percent from the year before to 1.1 million viewers. It also had the largest amount of viewers aged 18-34 for a cable station at 448,000, up 8 percent from the year before. Adult Swim carries a mix of programming from the United States, Japan, and elsewhere.

Adult Swim premiered the dubbed version of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Saturday. Adult Swim had hinted in January in an onscreen bumper on January 11 that "we think we bought three series [maybe]" after confirming that it will no longer air Death Note and Blood+.

Japan's 1st park attraction to follow journey of Luffy's pirate gang

The Laguna Gamori marine resort complex has announced on Monday that it will host a "One Piece Memorial Log in Lagunasia" theme park attraction from March 20 to June 27. While there have been theme park exhibits based on the One Piece anime franchise before, Laguna Gamori promotes the new project as Japan's first attraction to follow and recreate the journey of the pirate captain Luffy and his gang.

The complex is located in Gamori City in the central Japanese prefecture of Aichi, and it already held a "Mighty Atom Exhibition in Lagunasia" event from September to November of last year. That earlier event featured a statue of Tezuka's Astro Boy (Mighty Atom) character which stood over three meters (10 feet) tall.

Totoro Makes Cameo in Pixar's 3rd Toy Story 3 Trailer

Totoro helmer Hayao Miyazaki, Pixar founder John Lasseter are longtime friends

The title character of Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro film makes a cameo in Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich and Pixar's film project which just released its third trailer on Thursday. Toy Story 3 will open in North America on June 18.

Miyazaki and Pixar founder John Lasseter have been personal friends for two decades; the two have visited each others' studios frequently over the years, and Lasseter helped oversee the English release of Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Ponyo. Along with previous efforts, Lasseter opened a 2008 charity auction at Pixar's own headquarters for the Totoro Forest Project, an effort to save one of the forests that inspired My Neighbor Totoro.

Funimation Announces Dragon Ball Z Kai's English Cast

Same as earlier Dragon Ball Z cast except for Gohan, Bulma, Narrator, Chiaotzu/Puar The North American anime distributor Funimation has announced the English dubbing cast of the Dragon Ball Z Kai anime series at the Katsucon event in Maryland on Sunday. Dragon Ball Z Kai's main cast will be the same as in Funimation's original English dub of Dragon Ball Z, except for four new cast members:

Gohan: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Bulma: Monica Rial
Narrator: Doc Morgan
Chiaotzu and Puar: Brina Palencia

Funimation confirmed that it will ship the first part of the series on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on May 18. Navarre Corporation, Funimation's parent company, had revealed the Dragon Ball Z Kai license earlier this month during its Q3 2010 earnings conference call.

The Dragon Ball Kai television series condenses the 1989-1996 Dragon Ball Z anime series to more closely follow Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga. In addition to a digital high-definition remastering and a re-recorded soundtrack, Dragon Ball Kai also enhances selected scenes with new effects or re-animated footage. Due to the years that have passed since the broadcast of Dragon Ball Z, some of the Japanese cast members have also been replaced in Dragon Ball Kai's re-recorded dubbing.

Funimation already licensed both the Dragon Ball Z television series and the earlier Dragon Ball television series. Viz Media publishes the original manga in North America.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Premieres on U.S. TV

Adult Swim debuts 2nd anime version of dark fantasy manga at midnight

The Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood television anime series will premiere on Cartoon Network 's Adult Swim programming block at midnight EST/PST early Sunday morning in the United States. The weekly English-dubbed episodes will also be available, as a download-to-own option, on the PLAYSTATION Network and Zune Marketplace on Sundays. Each new dubbed episode will then stream from the Adult Swim website on Wednesdays.

Like the first Fullmetal Alchemist television series in 2003-2004, the ongoing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime adapts Hiromu Arakawa's dark fantasy manga about two brothers who risked their bodies with human alchemy to unsuccessfully resurrect their mother. Now the two attempt to restore their bodies by seeking the illusive Philosopher's Stone, and they are not alone in their quest.

Unlike the earlier anime effort, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the manga more closely; Arakawa has acknowledged that her manga is coming to an end soon. The new anime retains the same main cast from the earlier anime's English dub, except for two recasted characters and one all-new character. Maxey Whitehead replaces Aaron Dismuke as Alphonse Elric, and J. Michael Tatum already replaced Dameon Clarke as Scar in the Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium Collection video spinoff. Bryan Massey plays the new character Isaac McDougal.

Funimation began streaming the television anime series in Japanese with English subtitles in North America last April, and it will release Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Part One on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on May 25. Viz Media published the 22nd volume of the original manga last month.
